PENANG:

The Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Yeoh Soon Hin has been recognized for his visionary leadership and dedication which have propelled Penang’s growth and development as a premier tourism destination.

The Malaysian Association of Theme Park & Family Attractions (MATFA) honours and celebrates leaders across the countries who effectively address the idea of innovation to the most challenging matters in Malaysia. This event was held on June 11 at Resort World Genting to award those who contributed greatly to the Malaysian tourism industry and economy. Among them were Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, the chairman of Genting Group, the former Minister of Tourism Tan Sri Panglima Abdul Kadir Bin Hj Sheikh Fadzir and Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Richard CK Koh, the founder of OWG Group.

This year, most fittingly, an award for leading the industry to a greater height goes to Yeoh who is willing to experiment and adapt to a constantly changing industry by elevating the standard of existing tourism products, and concurrently delivering new ones to appeal to different demographics.

“Amidst the challenging Covid-19 pandemic between 2020 to 2022, there was no hesitation to adapt to the new norm which were deemed essential with the restrictions and protocols in place at that instant to ensure the survivability of our local communities,” highlighted Yeoh.

He also set a benchmark of exemplary performance in the recovery of the industries. By undertaking a multi-year strategic growth plan known as the Penang Tourism Master Plan, Yeoh spearheaded a significant boost in the tourism sector, resulting in a substantial increase in tourist arrivals and revenues after the pandemic. By implementing effective marketing campaigns, forging international partnerships, and diversifying tourism offerings, Yeoh continues to position Penang as a premier destination, attracting visitors from around the world.

“One of the things I’ve always positioned Penang as is to provide a rich and affordable tourism experience to all walks of life. As the Penang State Government, I stand proud and grateful for this recognition bestowed upon me. This award is also a testament to the commitment of the state government, the unwavering support of the local communities and the resiliency of the Penang tourism stakeholders,” stated Yeoh.
