Penang:

Penang’s rich cultural heritage took centre stage today with the official launch of the “Traditional Trades of Penang” video series at The Whiteaways Arcade. The launch, officiated by Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Wong Hon Wai, unveiled a heartfelt tribute to the artisans and crafts that define Penang’s living heritage.

Produced by Penang Global Tourism, the 10-part documentary series showcases trades such as peanut candy-making, wooden clog carving, capal crafting, nutmeg processing, beaded Nyonya shoes, and more. Each short film spotlights the human stories behind the trades — generational artisans preserving tradition with passion and pride.

The event also announced the upcoming “Seberang Perai Story” video series, expanding the lens to heritage beyond George Town.

Timed with the 17th anniversary of George Town’s UNESCO World Heritage Site status, the initiative aligns with this year’s George Town Heritage Celebrations. Complementing the series, an exhibition of illustrated artworks by Kevin Goh will be held at the Whiteaways Arcade from 1–7 July.

Director Benjamin Mok was praised for capturing the “soul” of each artisan. In his speech, YB Wong Hon Wai urged the public to not only enjoy the videos, but also to support these trades by visiting workshops, purchasing handmade crafts, and sharing the stories.

“This series is a celebration of Penang’s multicultural spirit,” said Wong. “Let us ensure these trades don’t just live in memory, but in our everyday lives.”

The “Traditional Trades of Penang” series is now available to the public, spotlighting the crafts, stories, and communities that continue to shape the cultural identity of Penang.
