Penang has strengthened its position as a key tourism and economic gateway between Malaysia and China with the launch of Sichuan Airlines’ new direct route from Chengdu Tianfu International Airport to Penang. The announcement was made today during the China Sichuan Airlines Product Presentation at JEN Penang Georgetown, officiated by Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai.
In his keynote address, YB Wong revealed that Penang is now directly connected to four out of China’s top five airports ranked by passenger throughput, based on statistics from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). These airports include:
-
Shanghai Pudong International Airport (Ranked No. 1)
-
Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (Ranked No. 2)
-
Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (Ranked No. 4)
-
Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (Ranked No. 5) – now served by Sichuan Airlines
The only top-five airport currently not directly connected to Penang is Beijing Capital International Airport, which remains a key target for future route development.
YB Wong emphasized that this milestone reflects the Penang state government’s strategic efforts in cultivating stronger ties with China’s tourism and aviation sectors. “With this new flight, Penang becomes even more accessible to Chinese travellers. It’s not just a flight route – it’s an air bridge that strengthens tourism, business, and cultural ties between our regions,” he stated.
He also highlighted the broader context of this connectivity boost, pointing to the recent extension of visa-free travel policies between Malaysia and China until at least 2030. Malaysia has increased the visa-free stay for Chinese tourists from 30 to 90 days, further encouraging two-way travel.
The inaugural flight from Chengdu, arriving tonight, marks a significant step forward in positioning Penang as a top destination for Chinese travellers. Both Chengdu and Penang offer rich cultural legacies and diverse attractions—from Penang’s UNESCO-listed George Town and culinary fame to Chengdu’s scenic heritage and renowned panda sanctuaries.
“Chengdu and Penang may differ in geography and culture, but they complement each other perfectly. This new route brings us closer than ever before,” added YB Wong.
He concluded by thanking Sichuan Airlines for their commitment to deepening Malaysia–China relations and expressed optimism for more collaboration ahead.
This launch signals a new chapter in Penang’s international tourism connectivity and opens new horizons for business, cultural exchange, and mutual prosperity between Malaysia and China.
