PENANG:

“Penang’s competitiveness as a travel destination is boosted by better air connectivity, which significantly increases travellers’ interest in exploring Penang.

“More employment opportunities and financial benefits are anticipated stemming from this endeavour. It will also open the door for the tourism sector to grow sustainably,” Wong said at a press conference after launching the event at Courtyard by Marriott Penang.

He also advised tourism-related businesses to get ready to welcome tourists with exceptional customer service.

Following the direct flights to Shanghai, Wong disclosed that discussions are underway to introduce direct flights between Penang and Chennai, India, by the end of the year.

He mentioned having previously visited four cities in India, namely New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kochi (Cochin) in efforts to establish direct flight connections.
Wong says another direct flight is likely to be introduced between Penang and Chennai, India, at the end of this year.

Wong also urged the Federal government to engage in discussions with China regarding the implementation of a permanent visa exemption between the two countries for a greater share of the Chinese tourism market.

He noted that Thailand has announced its decision to implement a permanent visa-free policy with China starting from March.

Steven Andres Goh, general manager of Juneyao Airlines Penang, outlined the operational details of the new direct flight between Penang and Shanghai.

“The flight will initially operate four times a week, with the possibility of increasing the frequency to eight times a week in the future.

“With a duration of roughly five and a half hours, the direct flight between Shanghai and Penang promises a smooth travel experience aboard the A320 Airbus,” he said.

Also present at the launching ceremony were Ooi Chok Yan, chief executive officer of Penang Global Tourism; David Wang, revenue management manager of China Juneyao Airlines Headquarters; Carolyn Leong, chairman of Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA); Edwin Tan, chairman of Malaysia Chinese Travel Association (MCTA) Penang Chapter and several tourism industry representatives.
