GEORGE TOWN :

According to Penang Hotel Chapter Chairman Khoo Boo Lim, occupancy rates for Penang hotels are expected to be boosted before September this year.

He said that the state government already approved the World Hospitality Lifestyle and Entertainment  (WHOLE) 2020, a conference and exhibition to be held at the SPICE Arena on Sept 10-12.

He said WHOLE 2020 would tackle many issues facing the hotel industry during the RMCO and that IT would also be a forum for businesses to organize business events in Penang.

“This will also be the first WHOLE event and Penang will be taking the lead,” he told.

He said the hotel occupation in Penang did not show any encouraging results during the week, possibly because of the slow market in the MICE industry.

The MICE market played an important part in boosting the rate of hotel occupancy on weekdays, considering that Penang is one of the favorite destinations for companies to hold corporate conferences, seminars, and team buildings, he said.

“I was informed that many hotels in Penang have received several inquiries from corporate companies, asking about the guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOP) that they need to comply with (to hold business events).

“We need the MICE (market) to grow the hotel occupancy rates,” he added.
