Thimphu:

High in the Himalayas, Bhutan is making headlines by becoming the world's first nation to launch a countrywide, government-backed cryptocurrency payment system for tourists. More than 1,000 vendors now accept crypto payments, signaling rapid adoption and Bhutan's intent to attract tech-savvy travelers.

Supported by Binance Pay and Bhutan’s digital DK Bank, the system enables visitors to pay for visas, flights, hotels, and even cultural site entries using digital currencies. While tourists pay via cryptocurrency, vendors instantly receive payments in local currency, shielding them from crypto market volatility.

Bhutan, known for its "gross national happiness" philosophy, began mining bitcoin in 2018 using the country's abundant hydroelectric resources. The Himalayan kingdom now ranks fifth globally in government-held bitcoin reserves, valued at around US$1.28 billion.

Tourism officials believe the new payment system will attract digital nomads and younger travelers, revitalizing the industry post-pandemic. The country hopes the seamless, tech-forward payment experience will double tourist arrivals and significantly boost tourism's contribution to the economy.
