The Kelantan state government is backing a proposed cross-border traditional boat race along the Golok River, with hopes of transforming it into a flagship international tourism event that celebrates cultural unity between Malaysia and Thailand.
Dubbed the ‘Yor Kong’ Boat Race, the initiative aims to attract participation from both Kelantan and Thailand’s Narathiwat province. Datuk Kamaruddin Md Nor, Chairman of the State Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee, said the event is poised to be elevated from past small-scale informal races into a full-fledged annual programme with global appeal.
“Similar races have taken place before, but this time we want to make it official and impactful,” he stated after officiating the closing ceremony of a local boat race in Sungai Golok.
Pangkalan Pohon Jambu, located at the Malaysia–Thailand border, has been identified as the proposed venue. Kamaruddin highlighted the location’s strategic suitability, with a narrow river ideal for spectator viewing and existing basic infrastructure. He also praised the collaboration with Sungai Golok Mayor Saleeha Mayutoh for her strong support.
The recently concluded two-day boat race event drew around 2,000 spectators, including many from across the border, with 40 teams competing—five from Malaysia. One of the standout attractions was the blindfold boat race category, which Kamaruddin believes could become a major crowd-puller.
“This is more than a sporting event—it’s about nurturing bonds and enhancing people-to-people connections. The blindfold race, especially, offers a unique experience that can leave a lasting impression,” he said.
Discussions with Thai authorities are expected to begin soon to finalise logistics and formal partnerships. Kelantan sees the initiative as a valuable tourism driver and a means to celebrate the rich cultural heritage shared across the border.
