Kuala Lumpur:

Malaysia’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) has launched a sweeping nationwide enforcement operation aimed at rooting out illegal tourism operators and elevating industry standards, in a move set to bolster integrity within the tourism sector. Within the first two weeks of July alone, 22 targeted operations were conducted across multiple states, resulting in 13 official notices being issued to unlicensed operators.

The comprehensive blitz saw Motac inspect a total of 180 tourism vehicles, 30 registered tourism companies, four accommodation premises, and 33 tour guides—underscoring the ministry’s resolve to clamp down on violations and ensure all players comply with national licensing laws.

Perak was among the key hotspots during the operation, following a string of public complaints and online tip-offs regarding suspected illegal tourism services. Surprise checks uncovered unlicensed transport providers, hosts, and travel organisers—many of whom promoted their offerings through social media channels.

Motac has reiterated that any entity—whether a transport service, travel agency, accommodation provider, or freelance tour guide—must be officially licensed by the ministry before operating, regardless of whether they operate physically or online. Violators risk heavy fines, legal action, and blacklisting from future tourism-related activities.

“These enforcement efforts are not just about penalising offenders,” a Motac spokesperson said. “They are about ensuring tourist safety, protecting consumer rights, and safeguarding the reputation of Malaysia as a world-class travel destination.”

Motac also issued a stern call for voluntary compliance, encouraging unlicensed operators to immediately begin the registration process at their nearest state office or through the ministry’s official online platform. The ministry offers assistance including licensing briefings, consultation services, and digital submissions.

In addition to regulatory efforts, the public has been urged to report any suspicious or unlicensed tourism activities via Motac’s hotlines or digital channels.

With tourism numbers rising steadily and Malaysia preparing for Visit Malaysia 2026, the crackdown is seen as a critical step towards creating a transparent, professional, and safe tourism environment aligned with global best practices.

Summary of Enforcement Activity (July 2025):

  • Tourism Vehicles Inspected: 180

  • Tourism Companies Checked: 30

  • Accommodation Premises Inspected: 4

  • Tour Guides Assessed: 33

  • Notices Issued: 13

  • Enforcement Operations Conducted: 22

Motac’s message is clear: compliance, safety, and service quality are non-negotiable pillars of Malaysia’s tourism future.
