Thailand’s tourism sector is facing growing setbacks following the ongoing border tensions with Cambodia, which have led to a surge in hotel cancellations across nine provinces. According to the Thai Hotels Association (THA), more than 5,266 room bookings have been cancelled since 24 July, with Chiang Mai (2,089) and Bangkok (1,863) the most affected.
THA President Thienprasit Chaiyapatranun revealed that most cancellations came from domestic travellers, followed closely by Asian tourists. While new bookings since the conflict began stand at 6,835 room nights, the overall pace has slowed, raising concerns for the months ahead.
Travel advisories issued by foreign governments have played a key role in deterring visitors, particularly due to their impact on travel insurance policies—a critical requirement for many travellers. Provinces near the Cambodian border are experiencing the greatest fallout.
Adding to the uncertainty are existing security concerns in the ASEAN region, including cases involving tourist abductions linked to scam networks, which have not been widely addressed.
The THA urges swift diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and restore confidence in Thailand’s travel safety, as prolonged instability could further erode the country’s tourism recovery.
