KOTA KINABALU:

Sabah has taken a major step towards positioning itself as a premier birdwatching destination with the introduction of a new birding certification module, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) and the Sabah Birdwatchers Association.

The agreement was formalised in the presence of Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister cum Sabah Tourism Board chairman, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who described the initiative as timely and strategic in developing birdwatching as a key niche in Sabah’s eco-tourism offerings.

“According to birding experts, the UK alone has around six million active birders, while the number across Europe is estimated to be close to 10 million,” said Joniston. “If we can attract even one per cent of that market, it would be a strong start for Sabah.”

The MoU, signed by UCSF Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Rafiq Idris and Sabah Birdwatchers Association president Ronald Pudin, also marked the launch of a new training module titled “Discover the Birds of Borneo: Sabah’s Feathered Jewel.” The programme is designed to certify local birding enthusiasts and tour guides, building a foundation for skilled eco-tourism professionals.

Backed by the Sabah Tourism Board, the certification module is part of a broader push to formalise birdwatching into a structured, sustainable tourism product that benefits local communities.

“Birdwatchers are known to spend more, stay longer, and venture into lesser-known areas,” Joniston said. “This means economic opportunities for rural communities and increased awareness of conservation.”

He added that the initiative can empower rural youth with valuable guiding skills and help foster long-term environmental stewardship.

“When people see real value in protecting their natural heritage, they’re more likely to support conservation—and that’s the kind of sustainable tourism we’re aiming for,” he said.
