SABAH:

According to Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew, the event at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) when a Chinese visitor was detained by Immigration may harm Sabah's tourism sector.

Liew is optimistic that the relevant agencies and parties can quickly address the claims of corruption in the treatment of foreign tourists at the KLIA now that the Prime Minister is in charge.

She expressed grave concern that these accusations would hurt Malaysia's tourism industry if prospective visitors chose not to travel here.

"We are relieved to hear from the Prime Minister that the Cabinet would examine the topic this Wednesday and that an investigation into the charges (made by Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing) would be carried out.

We shouldn't let this reported incident ruin our good relationship because Malaysia, especially Sabah, and Sarawak, has always enjoyed the visits of Chinese tourists in the past.

She stated in a statement on Monday, "We welcome all tourists and visitors and want them to enjoy the entrancing beauty of our land and Malaysians' kind friendliness.

Liew was commenting on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's unexpected Sunday visit to the KLIA and his assurance that those responsible will face the proper consequences.

Since we have begun to reopen our international borders, Sabah's tourism industry, which is on the road to recovery, could be particularly harmed by this terrible circumstance.

"Tourism activity is picking up post-pandemic as tourists have started coming to Sabah in droves, with the resumption of direct scheduled flights from China and Korea, among other countries," she claimed.

Liew is now leading a high-level ministry delegation to China on a formal working visit. Shanghai, Xian, and Beijing will be covered during the working visit up until July 9.

Important discussions with Chinese government representatives and airline representatives will be held by Liew during this official visit to discuss issues about tourism and look into potential areas of cooperation.
