The Malaysian government has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform 20 rural villages into thriving tourism destinations under the Desa Kirana@KKDW initiative, aiming to boost rural economies in preparation for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
The programme, spearheaded by the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW), is expected to generate tangible benefits by next year, including a projected 20% income increase for participating communities, depending on tourism product types and geographic advantages.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who officiated the launch at Sunway Putra Hotel, described the initiative as a catalyst for inclusive and sustainable rural tourism. “Desa Kirana@KKDW will introduce structured tourism offerings and elevate rural villages into competitive, appealing destinations for both domestic and international travellers,” he said.
Two pilot villages — Kampung Pulau Tanjung Surat in Johor and Kampung Lonek in Negeri Sembilan — have been selected for their strong cultural heritage and community-based tourism potential.
Managed by KKDW’s Community Economic Development Division (EK), the programme is positioned as a 2025 “game changer” that will enhance the rural tourism ecosystem and align with broader national tourism goals.
Deputy Minister Datuk Rubiah Wang was also present during the launch. Earlier in the day, Zahid chaired the first MEXCLUB Coordination Meeting for 2025, held in conjunction with the event.
The initiative will also spotlight existing rural tourism attractions developed under KKDW and its agencies, with a focus on drawing more local and foreign tourists into Malaysia’s heartland.
