Bangkok:

Tourists heading to Thailand are strongly advised to steer clear of cannabis flower following a major regulatory shift by Thai authorities. As of 23 June 2025, cannabis flower is now officially listed as a controlled substance, and recreational use, possession, or purchase is strictly prohibited under Thai law.

The new regulation, issued by the Ministry of Public Health under the Thai Traditional Medicine Wisdom Protection and Promotion Act B.E. 2552 (2009), revokes the previous 2022 directive and reinforces Thailand’s tightened stance on cannabis use.

Key points of the regulation include:

  • Recreational cannabis is illegal in all forms.

  • Tourists may only possess cannabis flower with a valid medical prescription issued by a licensed Thai practitioner in traditional medicine, Chinese medicine, or dentistry.

  • Prescribed quantities must not exceed a 30-day supply, and only for medical necessity.

  • Cannabis sales, advertising, and vending—including online, in parks, temples, zoos, and amusement venues—are strictly banned.

  • Authorities are actively cracking down on unlicensed cannabis shops, particularly those in tourist zones.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) urges all visitors to stay informed and compliant. Past perceptions of leniency toward cannabis in Thailand no longer apply. “What may have seemed acceptable is no longer permitted,” said a TAT spokesperson. “Visitors must understand the legal risks involved.”

For official inquiries or clarifications, visitors can contact the Ministry of Public Health’s Food and Drug Administration via the Hotline: 1556.

Stay aware, stay informed, and enjoy a responsible trip to Thailand.
